Programs & Services
In addition to the programs listed below, many of our properties host monthly coffee hours, holiday parties, guest speakers/entertainers, potluck dinners, movie nights and field trips for our residents.
Fitness and Wellness Program
Fitness Studios on-site at both Casselman and Weeks Houses are equipped with Keiser exercise machines, treadmills, as well as NuStep recumbent cross trainers. The Studios are available to all residents of NCDF properties. A Fitness Studio at Warren House, equipped with state-of-the-art exercise machines, is available to all residents.
The Youth Center, located in the NCDF Community Center at Houghton Village, serves school-aged children from 5 to 14 years of age who reside within any NCDF community. Activities include an after-school homework club, computer access and classes, arts and crafts, cooking, field trips and movie nights. An activities calendar is distributed monthly.
American Culture: Understanding and Appreciation is designed to immerse participants in the language and cultural traditions of our country – whether you arrived here recently or have lived here all your life. Encompassing more than basic language instruction, the program combines innovative classroom learning with practical application of conversational English and discussion of American history, customs and traditions. Offered both at Casselman and Weeks Houses, the course consists of three weeks of on-site classes and a field trip during the fourth week. Classroom sessions typically include writing, reading and conversation relating to past and current events. Trips to museums, restaurants, libraries and other community destinations provide opportunities to put language skills to practical use while enjoying regional cultural amenities. For those who speak English as a second language, the program seeks to enhance proficiency in listening and speaking English. For all participants, it is a unique way to learn about local history, American culture, the traditions of other nationalities, and the range of cultural resources in our area. The American Culture program is open to all NCDF Residents, as well as to interested seniors living in and around Newton.
Care Connections is a collaboration between Springwell and Newton Community Development Foundation. Services are provided by housekeeping and personal care aides from Jewish Family & Children’s Services (JF&CS). Caseworkers have been specially chosen to provide flexible, timely services. A Care Coordinator monitors and adjusts services for each resident as needed to support independence and to assist family members. For those that qualify, there is a sliding scale for private pay services.
Food For Thought
This lunchtime educational program, which takes place at both Casselman and Weeks House, consists of a hot luncheon delivered from local restaurants or prepared by local caterers, followed by an informative, educational lecture, discussion, and/or demonstration on topics such as good nutrition, alternative medicine, how to manage your finances, mind and body connections, etc. Residents must register in advance and there is a nominal fee charged to help defray the costs of the meal and lecture.
File of Life Program
More than 90% of medical emergency calls are treated without knowledge of the patient’s medical history. The File of Life card enables Fire/Police/EMS personnel to obtain a quick and accurate medical history when a patient is unable to offer one. The card also limits the risk of a patient forgetting to mention something important. The card, which is kept in a red plastic pocket labeled File of Life, lists the patient’s name, emergency medical contact, insurance policy and social security numbers, as well as any relevant information about health problems, medications, dosages, allergies, recent surgeries and health care proxies.
YMCA Discount Fees
Newton Community Development Foundation has an agreement with the West Suburban YMCA which allows NCDF residents to use the entire Y facility at reduced rates, including the gym, indoor track, pool, strength and cardiovascular workouts and fitness orientation.
